English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes

Most of the Rohingya community is pre-literate because they were denied an education in Burma. It is essential that our ESL classes be designed for pre-literate learners. Attending class for the first time in their lives is a huge undertaking for our adult learners. It often takes a year of dedicated attendance for students to be ready to enroll in our Citizenship Classes. Few agencies dedicate the time and expense needed to meet these emerging students requirements. RCC has designed a curriculum to best suit the needs of our adult learners. We provide high quality childcare for the young children of these parents so they can attend class. Our class is faithfully attended by students who come four times a week for two hours.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, we were able to provide electronic tablets for 40 ESL students. We taught them how to use the tablets so they could continue their studies via Zoom.
